Station wagons have long had the reputation of being extremely practical and safe — and a bit boring. The polar opposite of a sports car, a wagon can easily carry all your kids and their equipment to your destination, but may take a while getting there. That is, unless you are driving a Mercedes superwagon.

The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon is a car without compromises. It is one of those rarest of cars that truly has it all. A huge interior with seating for seven? Check. Luxury appointments and the latest in high-tech safety features? Check. And the thrill of world-class power, speed and handling? Definitely a check.

The one thing that most stands out about this Mercedes-Benz superwagon, compared to other station wagons, is its speed. The E63 AMG is powered by Mercedes-Benz’s M157 engine, a twin-turbo V8 that produces 518 horsepower and 516 pound-foot of torque — until you add the P30 Performance Package, which boosts those numbers up to 550 horsepower and 590 pound-foot of torque. With that boost, the Mercedes-Benz superwagon can go from naught to 60 in 3.9 seconds, meaning that its true competition on the drag strip would have to come from two-seat sports cars. (For example, the lithe and lightweight Porsche Boxster S requires 4.8 seconds to make the same 0-60 run.)

Of course, the E63 AMG Wagon is not all brawn and no brains. To keep your precious cargo safe, the E63 comes with features such as Active Blind Spot Assist, which senses unseen objects when merging and can warn the driver or even take steps to avoid a collision. Active Lane Keeping Assist can prevent a drowsy driver from straying outside the lines on the road. And, of course, the cabin is surrounded by airbags for both driver and passengers.

The Mercedes-Benz superwagon has the distinction of being the most exclusive vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It produces fewer superwagons than any other model, and they cannot be found in showrooms; they must be special ordered. Mercedes-Benz Set To Show Off Baby Coupe At Beijing Motor Show

At the 2012 Bejing Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz will debut its latest, and potentially smallest, vehicle intended for the American market.

Based on the A-Class available in Europe, the new fourdoor “coupe” from Mercedes-Benz has been officially named the CLA. The smaller, though still luxurious, offering from Mercedes-Benz is doubtless meant to introduce a new, younger generation to the brand. Its higher fuel economy may also help the company meet and exceed the federal government’s overall mileage requirements.

Details about the new model are still scarce, as it is not expected to go on sale until 2013. The base engine for the model will probably be in the 100-150 horsepower range, though it appears that an AMG variant is in the works that will sport more than twice as much horsepower. The small CLA is expected to have many features normally reserved for larger sedans, such as a radar-based collision-avoidance system.

At the same time that the CLA is making its debut in Beijing, the similarly named and similarly new CLC will have its unveiling on this side of the Pacific. The CLC, also known as the Concept Style Coupe, will be on display in Los Angeles at an art festival called “Transmission LA: Audio Visual Club curated by Mike D.” Yes, that is Mike D from the New York-based hip-hop group the Beastie Boys. The multidisciplinary art show will feature visual art, music, food and, obviously, at least one car. The festival is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, which chose the CLC as its representative piece of artwork for the show. It is worth clarifying that the CLC in Los Angeles and the CLA in Beijing are different models, even though the CLA project had at one time been referred to as the CLC.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe: A Glimpse Of The Future At Transmission LA

Unveiling a car at an arts festival may sound left of the middle, but Mercedes-Benz and its exceptional range of vehicle have never been middle of the road. The prestige automaker will be unveiling its new Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe (CLC) at Transmission LA: Audio Visual Club in late April, an event sponsored by the company and regarded as one of the key, emerging events for cutting-edge art, film and music.

Curated by Beastie Boys’ front man Mike D, visitors will be able to see the much-touted Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe in the metal. An evolution of the F800 Style Concept revealed at the Geneva Auto Show in 2010, this version is based on the all-new A Class that impressed critics at its unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show.

The old A Class featured technological innovations (the engine was placed under the cabin floor to free up space, for example), but its looks were perhaps conservative. But the new svelte A Class shows that styling for this sector is now a priority for the German company.

This means we can expect the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe to be visually spectacular, featuring swooping lines and a bold, sporting facia, with rumors suggesting that the auto will be a front-wheel-drive, four-door coupe, to be followed by a five-door shooting-brake model.

Mercedes-Benz Debuts 5 Vehicles At 2012 Chicago Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz took the 2012 Chicago Auto Show by storm with the debut of several models, including the C-Class coupe and sedan, the SL-Class, and the SLS AMG Roadster.

Although the C-Class is not new, there have been so many improvements and styling changes (2,000 of them, to be exact) that it practically is a new model. They look similar, but the roofline of the coupe is actually 1.5 inches lower than the sedan. Let’s go over the details of the C-Class sedan and coupe:

The C250 has a turbocharged, direct-injected, 1.8L inline, four-cylinder engine that puts out 201 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. of torque.

The C350, also with direct injection, sports a 3.5L V6 outputting 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both come with the new seven-speed automatic transmission for an increase in fuel mileage, durability and driving response.
Their big brother, the C63 AMG, has a naturally aspirated 6.3L V8 outputting 451 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque (481 horsepower with optional AMG development package). This engine mated to AMG’s multiclutch transmission (MCT) makes the C63 one serious ride.
The C300 is also available as a sedan only. It comes standard with the Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system mated to the proven 3.0L V6.

Now let’s look at the SL-Class:

SL-Class stands for “super lightweight,” and Mercedes-Benz has outdone itself. A new all-aluminum body shell makes the SL-Class more rigid and lighter.

Both SL-Class models are two-passenger RWD convertibles.
The SL550 packs a 5.5L V8 with 382 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque.
The SL63 AMG has a 6.2L V8 with an astounding 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both SL-Class models come with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Last on the list, but certainly not least, is the SLS AMG Roadster. Instead of the gull-wing doors of the coupe, the Roadster is a convertible. With a 6.2L V8 (563 horsepower and 479 lb.ft. of torque) and the AMG dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic, it is reported to reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz ML 63AMG Available Spring 2012

In general, SUVs are seen as somewhat conservative vehicles, offering practicality, a high vantage point, and dependable all-wheel drive for when the going gets tough. The Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG range has always been seen as a cut above its competitors, offering the luxury and desirability one would expect from the automaker. Mercedes-Benz Launches Hybrid Offensive

Mercedes-Benz is respected by the motoring world for its commitment to developing greener technology for its automobiles, and it has recently announced two of the most important eco-vehicles to its already impressive line-up. The legendary E-Class series has bewitched customers for more than a decade, with its class-dominating pursuit of true luxury motoring.

This year sees the launch of hybrid versions of this iconic sedan in the shape of the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID and E400 HYBRID. The former comes in both sedan and estate styles as one would expect from the series, but now there is something new under the hood in the shape of a 204 hp diesel engine mated to an electric motor, meaning CO2 emissions of a mere 109g per kilometer.

While the environmental benefits are clear, it’s also good news for your finances, thanks to economy figures that offer savings of around 15 percent compared with the diesel-only E250 CDI. Such innovation means that the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the world’s most economical vehicle in the luxury business sector.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz E400 HYBRID is fitted with a 306 horsepower engine mated to an electric motor. Thanks to the set-up, the luxury car is able to achieve a combined fuel consumption figure of 27 miles per gallon. A key issue for many eco-conscious drivers, however, is whether the class-leading E-Class series has been compromised to achieve such spectacular results.

Mercedes-Benz News from the North American International Auto Show

This year’s North American International Auto Show held in Detroit has been a huge success — not only for the show itself, which saw its best opening day in five years, but for the luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz. Attendees were wowed by the unveiling of the all-new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, the sixth generation of this iconic luxury roadster that boasts a rich heritage over its 60-year lifespan.

Manufactured almost entirely from aluminum for the first time, the sports car is 275 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, meaning more exploitable power, and a more rigid and safe structure. The weight savings mean that the 429 horsepower produced by the new twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 engine in the SL550 will be even more dramatic with a 0–60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. To put that number in perspective, the previous version took 5.3 seconds.

Under the hood, drivers will find a seven-speed auto transmission and a stop/start system to reduce emissions and to aid fuel economy. As to be expected from the three-pointed star, a host of innovations show off the company’s pursuit of bleeding-edge technology.

One such innovation is the optional Magic Sky Control retractable hardtop, which features a near-transparent roof that can be darkened at the touch of a button. Another is a new heated wiper-blade system, dubbed Magic Vision Control, which oozes washing fluid out of 40 holes embedded in each wiper. This means there’s no chance of being hit by unwelcome overspray if you are attempting to clean your windshield while the roof is down.

Visitors to the North American International Auto Show were also able to look at the recently announced E400 Hybrid sedan which, as regular readers of this blog will recall, boasts an impressive combined fuel consumption of 27 mpg.
